I’m a freelance editor of fiction and nonfiction books, with special emphasis on literary fiction, historical fiction, speculative fiction, memoirs and biographies. As an acquisitions editor at Algonquin Books, I acquired and published dozens of books, including several bestsellers. I’ve edited seven New York Times bestselling books on the top ten list, ghostwritten two national bestsellers, and consulted with the University of Georgia Press on natural history books, and have worked on books on everything from sailing to parasitic zoonoses. Please consult my LinkedIn profile for a more detailed accounting of my work in editing, and the “Editing” page (above) for more information on my freelance editing services.

I'm also a writer living in Pittsboro, North Carolina. I'm currently a contributing editor at Harper's Magazine, The Oxford American magazine, and The Normal School. I also write for The New Republic, The Highline @ The Huffington Post, Men's Journal, Our State Magazine, and Southwest Magazine.  My work has been recognized in Best American Essays and I've been a resident at Yaddo. I have a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, and a master of fine arts degree in creative writing (fiction) from Bennington College.  I was once a newspaper reporter, an editor of books, a Marine officer and professional pyrotechnician. I like to run and lift weights.

I am also a USA Track and Field Level 2 endurance coach. I coach elite athletes, I’ve coached several all-American athletes and numerous NCAA Division 1 athletes, and I coach adults at all stages of their running journeys.
